Fluid Chillers for Sub-Zero Temperatures

Up to -50°C

Frigofluid commercializes and installs chillers for extremely low temperatures (well below zero), utilizing cascade systems with a guarantee of high efficiency and low energy consumption. These refrigeration units are prefabricated and often containerizable, built with meticulous attention to conformity, with tests and inspections carried out according to European Directives, such as 2014-68-EU. The ability to supply chillers that operate with natural refrigerants (ammonia and carbon dioxide) is a central element of our offer for environmental sustainability.

Main advantages and features

  • Extreme temperatures: our cascade systems are designed to reach significantly sub-zero fluid outlet temperatures. This is demonstrated by recent projects using R744 (carbon dioxide) refrigerant, which achieves evaporation temperatures of -41 °C or -31 °C, with fluid outlet temperatures (e.g., Hydrogen) down to -38 °C.

  • Eco-friendly refrigerants: we offer solutions that utilize green refrigerants like R744 (CO2) in the low-temperature circuit. We can also supply chillers that use other eco-friendly refrigerants like R32 or R290 (Propane), in addition to designing solutions that employ natural fluids like ammonia, ensuring a low environmental impact.

  • High energy efficiency: the use of electronic expansion valves allows for high performance and a significant reduction in electricity consumption. The PLC management system also ensures greater efficiency by maintaining constant evaporation/condensation pressure.

  • Robust and standardized construction: the units are supplied complete with an AISI 304 metallic frame and anti-vibration supports, and all main components (Evaporators/Condensers, Compressors, Oil Separators, etc.) comply with current regulations.

Technical details

Industrial chillers for sub-zero temperatures can be designed for cooling different heat transfer fluids, including:

  • Ethylene or propylene glycol-based mixtures for food applications.

  • High-performance non-freezing liquids (e.g., Temper, Hycool).

  • Water, silicone oils, and diathermic oils.

For low-temperature fluid management, our units include specific components such as Bitzer compressors (screw for the first R513A stage and 4-cylinder for the second R744 stage), high-efficiency oil separators, and brazed plate PCHE evaporators.

Industrial applications

These systems are ideal for applications requiring precise control and very low temperatures, such as:

  • Food sector: cooling of sauces, creams, chocolate, syrups, wine, beer, milk, juices, or for the thermal treatment of industrial dough mixers and solid products in cooling tunnels.

  • Oil & Gas and Chemical-Pharmaceutical: complex applications such as the cooling of ultra-high-pressure Hydrogen (up to 1,050 bar), or for the control of raw materials stored in temperature-controlled environments.

  • Other Processes: custom solutions are available in various sectors, such as metalworking or mechanics.

Extreme Refrigeration of Ultra-High-Pressure Hydrogen

Frigofluid designed and supplied a prefabricated and containerized cascade refrigeration unit (Mod. S-RW 106.2), specifically calibrated for cooling Hydrogen. The challenge was to achieve an outlet fluid temperature (Hydrogen) of up to -37.90 °C, while managing extremely high pressure (up to 1,050 bar). The solution ensured high performance and low energy consumption, also utilizing the natural refrigerant R744 (CO2) in the low-temperature stage.
